Sickening Article about Game Development and the "Wage Slave" Attitude

I didn't think of that. I hope it is.

That's a shitty opinion, but if that really makes you physically ill then you don't have the fortitude to make it through life.

Wow, uhm... this is kind of a shitty and ableist thing to say. Not gonna lie.

Sickening Article about Game Development and the "Wage Slave" Attitude

I know I’m going to offend a lot of people by saying this

This should have been the first sentence of the article.

Programming cutscenes is probably the most tedious part of gam mak for me. I don't know how some devs do it.

Now, I could do the whole wall-of-text-with-busts thing and save some time. And they would be so much easier to playtest, too. But I think it's a bit late in my project for that.

I think I'm just gonna put cutscenes on the backburner and do other stuff so I dont burn out on them. _(:3」∠)_

Just let me get to the next combat area ;A;

It's once again that scary time for me right before releasing a demo! XD

A unity game is always a good time. You got this!

Long Gone Days

I saw this one on tumblr for a while and this looks seriously good. Subbed.

I've played a lot of games that make fun of tropes and cliches and most of the time, they're not funny.

Satire looks easy on paper, but it is truly a difficult thing to get right. With my first major game being a complete satire, even I don't think I did it 100% perfectly.

I find that the best way to subvert a trope or make it self-aware is to make it subtle and weave it into the narrative, rather than tell the player outright "hey, I'm parodying this trope.". Write the material that you are trying to parody as its own unique thing, to give it a sense of identity. If your characters are blurting out things like "Wow, that reminds me of (80s reference)" it comes off as weak writing. The best parodies are ones that give a strong sense of satire, but are also unique enough to stand on their own two feet as independent content.

Black Winter Review

Things are getting pretty tense, huh

I don't want to argue with people regarding the amount of playtime someone "needs" to make to write a review of a game... AGAIN. -_-

TBH if a game takes 40 freakin minutes to get to actual gameplay I think potential players deserve some kind of warning so they can decide whether or not they're up for nearly an hour of fluff.

As an aside: I see a lot of different criteria for what constitutes as "the actual gameplay" when it comes to this issue. Some people judge it from how long it takes to move your character around, and others measure it based on how long it is until you get to the first battle.

I suppose it's a matter of engagement; Final Fantasy IX takes almost an hour before you get to any combat that yields rewards yet it constantly keeps players engaged with minigames, items to find, and exploration. Whereas a game like Persona 4 takes three hours of bloated cutscenes to get started, and your only interaction is saving the game at the house.

Of course, I prefer the former since it's actually including the player in that timespan. Games that exclude the player entirely from beefy openings really do raise a red flag for the rest of the game for me.
